Founded in 1891 by railroad magnate, U.S. Senator, and former Governor of California Leland Stanford and his wife Jane Stanford, Stanford University was named after Leland Stanford's only son, Jr., who died as a young man, and cost its founders $15 million. The Stanfords decided to dedicate the university to their only son, and Leland told his wife: “The children of California will be our children.”
